A San Diego-based College of Arts branch of the University of Southern California acquires land near Balboa Park and money for construction but fails to get built.

1888

San Diego’s first college—the San Diego College of Letters—opens in Pacific Beach.  It closes in 1891, and soon after the buildings and grounds are sold.
